The Beginning of the End
Well we both recently handed in our letters of resignation at work. Its a little nerve racking, and a little exciting all at the same time. I guess no matter what happens I now have to move back to Canada or the Department of Homeland Security will be after me. No turning back now, on to the organizing and the questions. How do we get our stuff back up north? where to we store it? what about keeping insurance on our cars? how do we import our cars into Canada? who wants the TV that works great but weighs about 100lbs and is not worth moving? do we move our stuff or should we get someone else to? So much to figure out...so little time. Not to mention all the good byes, the why are you leaving us and the what are we going to do without you's? Oh and we still need to do some serious planning for our trip we currently have no place to stay in Cesky Budjovice or as we refer to it Cesky Budwiser, and when Will tried to call the hostel we are looking to stay in it didn't go so well. Hmmm....

Starting Off
It started off with a bit of a pipe dream idea. "You know what I'd really like to do some time...travel around the world" I said to my significant other Will. "Yeah, me too" he replied. Well after moving in together, several job promotions for the two of us, and a few years of trying to figure out what our priorities are we came up with a plan. Before I explain the plan a little bit of background information is required on the two of us.
Katy-A Canadian citizen living in the Southern United States, I currently work in the medical field.
Will-An American citizen living with Katy, currently working in the automotive/engineering field.
Seems like minor details, but it will help with the story I promise. So our plan is as follows: Quit our jobs, travel around the world for about a year, immigrate/move back to Canada, then Katy needs to find a job and Will wants to start MBA school.
So the two of us talked about it for a while and mulled it over. What did we have to lose? Jobs?...sure, but we've always found a job, and have always worked. No, the global recession won't affect us, we are somehow immune to it. (Just go with it) But we do both have professional degrees with a large amount of work experience so we should be able to find something at the end. Money? Really in light of the recent economic downturn, what's money anyways, a house you can't afford to move out of because of your mortgage payments? Realistically between the two of us we have no debts, own our compact and efficient foreign cars and are currently renting.
On the other hand what are our motivating factors? 1: The travel bug-Both of us have travelled as individuals extensively in the past, we have taken slightly different approaches to doing this but either way we have racked up a good number of passport stamps before meeting each other. 2:Time-If we don't do it now before the mortgage, the kids, the impending adulthood that awaits us then we have to wait until we are retired and quite frankly who wants to wait that long? If there is one thing I have learned from being in a hospital its to not take for granted there will always be more time to do the things you want to do. Why wait until old age before thinking about a bucket list, this is on my to do list. 3: Transition- I have been living in the US for almost 6 years, and Will has been in the South for 4, it is time for the both of us to head north. Will has agreed to attend school in Canada so that I may return to my home and native land. I have a funny feeling that once we are settled there he will be surprised at how different the two countries are and that he will experience "freedoms and liberties" that he hasn't in the past. We'll have to see on that one. 4: Reality- The remainder of both families are in the northern US or southern Canada-parents never get younger. No mom I'm not calling you old, you're just getting there faster than you were before.
So it was decided...away we go!
